Battling Wrinkles with Botox
Revolutionary Botox Therapy opens a new chapter in plastic surgery techniques
What Is Botox?
Botox is an exciting new cosmetic procedure that can simply, safely and effectively improve frown lines, forehead creases and “crows feet.” This procedure has shown remarkable improvements for wrinkles resulting from hyperactive facial muscles.
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be.
These hyperactive facial muscles can give a person an angry, tired, sad, or displeased appearance – even when they are not experiencing that emotion. By freezing these small muscles, we reduce this undesirable effect and reduce the wrinkles from these expressions.
How Does Botox Reduce Wrinkles?
When Botox is injected into a muscle it causes temporary (for several months) paralysis of that muscle. It has been safely used for many years in the treatment of eyelid spasm, eye muscle spasm that has caused crossed eyes, correction of facial muscle imbalance, and neck muscle spasm.
Botox blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Botox relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, so that your normal facial expressions are unaffected.
Botox injections have been used safely and effectively for over ten years to treat many ophthalmological and neurological disorders. Each year thousands of patients receive Botox treatments for a variety of conditions and it is quickly becoming a popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of aging.
If dynamic wrinkles make you look older than you are, Botox therapy can smooth them out and give you a more youthful and pleasant appearance. However, this procedure does not improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions.
Botox therapy is effective in treating problem areas such as:
- Glabella frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows)
- Forehead creases – Horizontal Forehead Lines
- “Crows Feet” areas at the corners of the eyes
About the Botox Therapy Procedure:
In a simple office procedure, Botox is injected using a fine needle in the overactive muscles. The muscle function becomes weakened, eliminating part or all of its function. Long standing skin creases will soften and may eventually disappear. The result is a softer, more relaxed and pleasant appearance.
The procedure takes about 10 minutes. You may return to work immediately; however, you should avoid exercise or massaging the area for a few hours afterwards, to limit any possible spreading of the medicine.
The effects take several days to develop. Once the muscle function is reduced, the results will last from 3 to 11 months. Occasionally, the initial therapy will not be totally effective and a follow-up treatment may be required. Most patients require less frequent injections over time as the muscles “retrain” or weaken from disuse.
Botox works by weakening the muscles of problem facial areas. Once the resting tone of the muscles is weakened, the pull of the muscle relaxes, and the skin flattens out. This is an entirely new approach to treating the aging face. Collagen and fat injections work by a different approach — filling in a wrinkle. These fillers are not as effective as Botox in improving the frown wrinkles between the eyebrows. By physiologically weakening the muscles, the natural tone of your skin will remove the wrinkles naturally.
Botox takes 3-5 days to take effect and lasts between 3-6 months. Botox is most effective for the frown lines between the eyebrows, but can also be used to lessen the horizontal wrinkles in the central portion of the forehead, and crows feet at the corner of the eyes. It is not effective for wrinkles in the middle and lower portion of the face.
Because of its extremely short shelf life, Botox needs to be prepared and used fresh. For this reason, we offer Botox therapy during a limited appointments basis, to ensure your therapy is done at maximum potency.
There are no serious side effects associated with the use of Botox at the doses that are employed. Side effects can be caused if the Botox migrates outside of the injection sites. For this reason, we recommend that you avoid heavy exercise or any massaging of the area for several hours after the injection. Because Botox is administered right in the office, you can complete the treatment in just a few minutes, without a break in your schedule. You can immediately resume regular activities. Some patients even schedule therapy during their lunch break and return to work right afterwards.
Although Botox therapy is not a substitute for a facelift, or other surgery, it can offer a less expensive alternative for some patients, such as older patients who cannot have surgery, or for younger patients who do not need major surgery.
